Kine A week said “The fresh new robust ‘crooks slip out’ try peopled with a colourful assortment from important and arresting letters, and these, skilfully manipulated because of the journalist and you will movie director, enable the motion picture in order to tread liquids efficiently. It is merely into end up it starts to fall apart, however the smack-up finale rescues they on the ‘red’. Ingeniously staged and you may wisely dialogued, it’ll have zero great difficulty from inside the lifestyle off its extremely unappealing identity.” [ 8 ]

Month-to-month Motion picture Bulletin told you “The film moves from the a fast speed, the newest discussion was smooth and you will characterisations generally productive. Manhood Powell and you will Evelyn Keyes direct this new cast professionally, given that investigator was played with big aplomb because of the see your face character, Lee J. Cobb.” [ nine ]

Richard Brody on New Yorker noted “So it terse and you can tight movie noir is actually considering the fresh romantic and you can elite group disputes of the term reputation, this new criminal mastermind (starred from the Cock Powell) behind a posh illegal local casino. The latest film’s blogger and director, Robert Rossen, sets up a good multidimensional chess online game, to own mortal stakes, between Johnny, their workplace (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s wife (Ellen Drew), a great cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you will a beneficial scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sis (Nina Foch) worked at gambling enterprise and you may dated a beneficial corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The fresh caustically epigrammatic program, the cast’s suavely managed gestures of like and you may menace, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you can stylishly cocky images (along with their political conscience) get this to pugnacious yet , detailed spectacle a low profile antique of category.” [ 10 ]

Photograph provides activity and you can anticipation, and specific small touches out of humor to incorporate taste. Ace performances by the Cock Powell, once the a gambling domestic overseer, and Lee J. Cobb, since the an authorities inspector, plus within the rating . Whilst the plot uses a common development, the brand new characterizations is fresh plus the activities sufficient so you’re able to overbalance. Dialogue is terse and you may topical, preventing the emotional, phoney contact. Uncommon digital camera angles appear occasionally to heighten interest and momentarily stop the eye. Strong teamplay from the Robert Rossen, doubling while the manager-scripter, and you can Milton Holmes, brand-new author and you will affiliate music producer, plus helps with making it a softer creation.” [ 11 ]

It is mostly a matter of watching Mr. Powell go through their paces fashionably when you are a big shed regarding actors and you will stars give your conventional help. Evelyn Keyes performs the nice nothing woman which brings about the new finest in him and you will Ellen Drew is the easy and you may slinky vixen whom becomes your on jams. Thomas Gomez is actually oily once the villain and you will Lee J. Cobb does another able journey just like the an exhausted cops inspector just who in the long run closes the case. A great deal of taking and you will smoking is completed by most of the concerned.” [ 12 ]
